Ensuring Job Security by Staying Away From Office Cubicle Po
It should come as no surprise to anyone anywhere in the world that companies and organizations everywhere are looking for every possible method to trim costs considering the dire economic conditions that exist in today’s business climate. Organizations large and small across varied industries and business ventures from information technology to warehousing, from transportation to chip design, from real estate to financial institutions, companies everywhere are struggling to stay afloat amidst a global economic slump that has hit even the healthiest of companies quite hard. In times of these, it is imperative that you hold on to your job as best as you can because losing a job in today’s bleak job market is the worst that can happen to anyone. While there are several things that go towards ensuring job security, we will consider one aspect in this brief article and that is to do with office cubicle politics.
As human beings, we all like to hear and spread great stories. The success of the media such as television and the internet is based upon the ability to propagate good stories and be the first to bring it to the attention of others. Television ratings are based upon the number of viewers and the number of viewers, it has been found, grows rapidly depending upon who reports a breaking story first. Hence, even in an office environment one may be tempted to spread the word that one hears in casual conversations. Office cubicles, by their design do not provide any significant level of privacy in conversations and it is quite possible to hear, even inadvertently, the conversations that may take place between two office colleagues in the next cubicle or even several cubicles away. While it may be tempting to take such a story and either spread it to others or spin it, add your flavor and then spread it, doing so may significantly jeopardize your employment with the company.
Many organizations detest such behavior and while some even go to the extent of putting it in their employee handbooks, the best method to prevent your employment from being terminated is simply to refrain from giving in to this temptation. There may be stories that you may overhear in your office cubicle about personal relationships or family matters or company matters between superiors and subordinates that may seem juicy and quite the information that everyone may be interested in hearing, but staying away from such office cubicle politics is almost a must in today’s business climate.
